This 13-day tour covers the best that KwaZulu-Natal and the northern part of South Africa has to offer – the Drakensberg Mountains, Battlefields, Zululand Mpumalanga’s Blyde River Canyon and an African Safari experience.  This tour brings together the magnificent scenery, historical, cultural and natural heritage of our beloved country.

Day 1 – Tue             Durban / Drakensberg                           (D)

Depart Durban and travel inland to Pietermaritzburg for a brief tour of the city and its captivating past. Continue the journey through the midlands to Howick and the site where late former President Nelson Mandela was captured on August 5th, 1962.  Continue via the Natal Midlands to your accommodation which holds a fine location within the Drakensberg range.  Check into the hotel and enjoy some time at leisure before enjoying dinner.  Overnight Champagne Castle Hotel (standard room) or similar

 

Day 2 – Wed           Drakensberg                                           (BD)

Enjoy the magnificent scenery on offer in the Drakensberg, as well as discover the cultural significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.  At Giant’s Castle we enjoy a 45-minute walk to the main caves for a short tour and interpretation of the paintings and artefacts on display in the museum.  Spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Day 3 – Thu             Spioenkop / Isandlwana                        (BD)

Make your way to Spioenkop Mountain where your guide will recount the Anglo-Boer 9-day battle in January 1900.  Continue to Ladysmith and visit the Seige Museum where a diorama excellently depicts its surrounding hills at the time of the Siege.  Travel via Dundee to your accommodation located in the heart of the battle sites between the Zulus and the British. Enjoy dinner at the hotel.  Overnight Rorke’s Drift Hotel (standard room) or similar

 

Day 4 – Fri               Battlefields                                             (BD)

Today is dedicated to the exploration of the most famous battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal – Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Overnight Rorke’s Drift Hotel (standard room) or similar

 

Day 5 – Sat              Battlefields / Hluhluwe                          (BLD)

After an early breakfast, travel across the various battle sites to Hluhluwe where you complete your Kwazulu Natal discovery with an African safari experience.  Dependant on arrival time, enjoy lunch followed by an afternoon open vehicle game drive. Return to the lodge for dinner. Overnight Falaza Game Lodge & spa (tented suite) or similar

 

Day 6 – Sun             Hluhluwe                                                (BLD)

Today you get to enjoy the amenities on offer at your accommodation.  The day includes all meals and two game viewing activities. Overnight Falaza Game Lodge & spa (tented suite) or similar

 

Day 7 – Mon           Hluhluwe – Durban – Johannesburg      (B)

Embark on a final game drive followed by breakfast and check-out formalities.  Stop en-route the Elephant Coast at St Lucia Estuary for an optional estuarine boat trip. Check in at King Shaka International Airport for your flight to Johannesburg, the City of Gold. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.  Overnight Protea Hotel Balalaika (standard room) or similar

 

Day 8 – Tue             Soweto & Apartheid Museum               (BL)

Today you will visit the townships of Soweto followed by an afternoon exploring the exhibit at The Apartheid Museum. Lunch today will be enjoyed at a local tavern in Soweto. Return to the hotel in the early evening. Dinner to own arrangements. Overnight Protea Hotel Balalaika (standard room) or similar

 

Day 9 – Wed           Johannesburg / Mpumalanga               (BD)

Depart Johannesburg and travel via the magnificent Panorama Route.  From many well-positioned vantage points, one has a view of the 33km long gorge, which starts at “Bourke’s Luck Potholes” and ends at the “Three Rondavels”. Time and weather permitting, stop at God’s Window. Late afternoon arrival at your hotel. Check in and freshen up before dinner. Overnight Perry’s Bridge Hollow (standard room) or similar

 

Day 10 – Thu           Safari Experience                                    (BLD)

After breakfast and check-out formalities, you will be transferred to your lodge located in a private reserve adjacent to the Kruger National Park for an African safari experience. Morning and evening game tracking drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles, allows you to be in close contact with South Africa’s extensive wildlife. Overnight Moditlo River Lodge (standard room) or similar

 

Day 11 – Fri            Safari Experience                                    (BLD)

Enjoy a full day of relaxation, combined with the excitement of a memorable safari experience with the scheduled game viewing activities and lodge facilities. Overnight Moditlo River Lodge (standard room) or similar

 

Day 12 – Sat           Mpumalanga / Johannesburg                (B)

Time permitting, embark on your final early morning game viewing activity before returning to camp for breakfast followed by check-out formalities. You shall be collected for your transfer to Hoedspruit OR Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for your flight to Johannesburg.  Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.  Overnight Protea Hotel Balalaika (standard room) or similar

 

Day 13 – Sun           Departure                                               (B)

After breakfast embark on a scheduled Johannesburg City Tour – a booming and happening city. Your tour ends with transfer to O.R. Tambo International Airport for your onward flight arrangements.
